The "Edit" menu lets you open the "Preferences" dialog of Smile. The "Preferences" dialog allows you to change the following settings.
All changes done in the "Preferences" dialog take effect immediately, except the AppleScript formats, which can be reverted.
Open Worksheet on launch
Smile ships with a special kind of text window named "Worksheet". The "Worksheet" is saved automatically on quitting Smile.
If this box is checked, the "Worksheet" will be opened automatically when Smile launches.
Remember opened windows
If this box is checked, Smile records the path names of all windows opened when you activate the "Quit" command. Next time Smile will be launched, it will attempt to re-open these files automatically.
Results are commented out
When you run a piece of script from a text window (see Scripts in text windows if you are not familiar with this), the result of its execution is appended to the text window. According to the setting "Results are commented out", this result is or is not preceded with two hyphens "--".
Script window background
Depending on your personal preferences, and on your monitor performances, you will prefer one of the three colors bondi (cyan), yellow or magenta.
When you change this setting, the change takes effect immediately. Thus, different script windows can have different colors. This can help to distinguish visually different script windows.
Language
Choose the language, English or French. The change takes effect immediately, except for the menus. The menus are updated only next time Smile is launched.
AppleScript formats
In a compiled script, each piece of text is displayed according to its status : comments, variables names, litteral strings, etc. Choose in the pop-up menu "Style for :" the category of string whose format you want to change. Then use the "Text" menu to set its style. The string "sample text for applescript" below the menu lets you check the setting.
As long as the "Preferences" dialog remains open, the changes made to the AppleScript formats are not saved. Clicking on the Revert button will reset the settings active when the "Preferences" dialog was opened.
Smile also lets you use AppleScript for maths, see Satimage osax and Smile dictionary.
• Setting the AppleScript formats has been made simple to implement thanks to a scripting addition provided by Marco Piovanelli. See credits about the AppleScript formatting scripting addition.
